Laughter, Flooding and Getting Bit by a Wild Hog

Monday July 22, 2024

Dear Diary,

I woke up at 2:30AM. I wrote my blog and went back to sleep at 4 AM. I woke up again at 5:30 AM. I laid there a while doing a full body relaxation session. Angel was still asleep and I didn’t wake her up. She would be staying home with Christopher today. I let out the chickens, ducks and geese and went into the house. Christopher was still asleep. I let out the yorkies and fed them. I made my smoothie and tea and left to do my farm-sitting opportunity. On the way, I picked up Tracey and we took care of the animals. Then I dropped Tracey back off and headed to Rockdale to do a couple of cleaning opportunities.

Cleaning went good and I told my clients that I would be moving. They took the news well. After finishing my last house, I went through the car wash and drove to Tracey’s. We sat on the couch talking and got each other laughing again. We laughed and laughed until tears were coming out of our eyes. For some reason we think we are hilariously funny. I love laughing.

I had started raining and the back roads were really muddy on the drive home. My clean truck was instantly dirty again 😂. I greeted Christopher and the dogs when I arrived. Bits had stayed home and he was super excited to see me. I let the yorkies out and back in. Angel was in her room attempting to get her DVD player going. I helped her with it but she wanted to figure it out on her own. I laid down on the couch to take a nap. I was almost asleep when I heard a loud thunder clap. Instantly, I  thought of the Ellie, the older dog where I’m farm-sitting. Yesterday I found her hiding in the shed after a thunderstorm. I needed to go check on her. I jumped up and told Angel and Christopher I had to go check on things at the farm. The road to get there was really bad from the rain washing parts of it out. The driveway up to the farm-sitting house was bad too. The creek was flowing over the top of the driveway and I wasn’t sure how deep it was but I made it through just fine. When I pulled up to the house, I couldn’t find Ellie anywhere. She wasn’t in the background shed or under the house. I fed the dogs thinking that might bring her out from wherever she was hiding but there was still no sign of her. I started praying that I would be able to find her.

I went around the front of the house to look for her. Three of the farm dogs started barking and ran off into the meadow. I thought it might be Ellie coming back but when I looked, it was a big group of wild hogs running across the field. The dogs ran out after them. I continued to look for Ellie when suddenly I heard a pig screaming. I looked out in the field and saw that the dogs had brought down a baby hog and were killing it. I couldn’t just stand by and watch or listen this happen. I took off running towards them. They were a long ways out there and I figured the pig would be dead by the time I got there. When I finally arrived at the scene, the pig was laying on the ground but it was still alive. The dogs had it surrounded and were biting it over and over. I kept yelling at them and pushing them away from the baby hog but they would run right back and bite it some more. I quickly came up with another plan to grab the collars of 2 of the dogs and hold them back. The dogs were moving fast and were full attack mode. It was difficult to grab ahold of their collars and ensure that one of them didn’t accidentally bite me. I got a hold of one collar and was reaching for another when I felt something bite my leg. I looked down and realized that my leg was right in front of the baby hogs mouth and it had bitten me. I stepped back and was able to get ahold of the collar of another dog. With 2 dogs secured. The third dog stopped to see what was going on. That gave the baby hog enough time to get to its feet and it ran off into the woods. The third dog stayed with us for a few seconds, then she took off after the baby hog. I held the dogs I had ahold of for a couple of minutes then I let them go. They bolted straight for the woods. I didn’t know if they would catch the baby hog again but at least it would be where I was not a witness to it.

I looked at my leg and saw that the baby hogs teeth had barely grazed the skin. I had been on the phone with Tracey when all this was happening but I had hung up when I was attempting to get the dogs away from the baby hog. I called him back and told him what had happened. We laughed at how fearless and adventurous I am.

I walked back up to the house and when I arrived, there was Ellie laying on the patio, alive and well. Yay! I was so happy to see her. She thumped her tail at me in greeting.  I helped her up onto the deck and gave her some food. Then I washed the hog bite really well. I found a first aid kit in a cart by the kitchen door and put rubbing alcohol on it as well as apple cider vinegar.

I was late for play practice and I sent a message saying I would be late because I got bit by a hog. I thought that was great fun to write. I finished up feeding the goats and chickens. Then I put Ellie inside and hearted (headed) to play practice. When I got off the dirt road onto the highway, there was a loud flapping noise underneath my truck. What in the world? I pulled over and looked around the tires in case something was caught on them. I didn’t see anything. I backed the truck up and went forward again in case something was on the brake pads. That didn’t fix the issue, the flapping noise started up again as soon as I started gaining speed. I pulled over again and looked underneath. I saw a big plastic cover hanging down. I tried pushing it back into place but it wouldn’t go. I tried pulling it off and it still wouldn’t budge. I turned on my hazards to see if I could get anyone to stop. Less than 30 seconds later a young couple pulled over. The guy asked if I needed help and I told him I did. I showed him the issue and by using my leatherman tool he was able to get the plastic cover off for me. I thanked him very much and offered to pay him. He refused any money and we chatted for a few minutes. He told me about helping another person on the side of the road earlier in the day. It seemed to have made his day that he got to help out 2 strangers in one day. I love people. They are so beautiful. The majority of people want to help each other in some way. It feels good to help others.

I finally made it to play practice almost an hour late but I was in great spirits. I had just experienced some fun adventures. It had been a great day so far. Play practice went good. I remembered all my lines and I’m gaining confidence in feeling like I can perform on stage without forgetting anything.

On the drive home from play practice, I was talking to Tracey on the phone again. I was driving on the highway where I had witnessed the accident where the man was burned to death in his semi truck while screaming for help. I was telling Tracey how it is getting easier for me to drive that highway. He asked if I remembered what he had told me a few months ago about why I had to be there to experience that. I didn’t remember and I asked Tracey to remind me. He said, it was because my light is so bright that it was necessary for me to be there in order for that man to feel safe enough to let go and make the transition to the other side. I then remembered the first time he had told me that. I had cried then and I cried now. What a beautiful comforting perspective. Thank you, Tracey.

When I pulled into the driveway at home, a dead tree had fallen and was blocking it. I got out to see if I could move it but it was way too big and heavy. I assessed the situation and it looked like I could barely make it around it on one side. I tested it out and it worked. The truck barely fit. I drove up to the house and parked. I went inside, Angel was still watching movies on her DVD player and Christopher was just getting into bed. I told him about the tree in the driveway and he said he would take care of it tomorrow. Even though we have split up and are getting divorced, things have been very amicable between us and I am grateful for that.

I took a shower and went to bed in the banana hut with Angel. We called Tracey and talked to him awhile. At around 10:30 pm I put on a kids dragon meditation and we fell asleep right away.

Thank you for reading my blog and being a part of my life. I appreciate you.

Love, Victoria
